Live!

August 9, 2005 the voting of the VFI executive committee on the Coalevo proposal was closed with an unanimous vote for starting the project that should build what should once become the new software platform for the VFI’s Online Community Project KaraNet.

From the inception during the summer and it’s kick off in August 2005, the project has come a long way and most importantly, it has accomplished what was promised in the beginning:
On December 31, 2008 around 4 o’clock in the morning KaraNet went online running on top of the Coalevo platform codebase.

(Author’s note: if you are interested in the codebase, please visit the Ohloh Code Analysis page.)

Sure enough there were some glitches and certainly some that yet have to be encountered, Nonetheless, it’s time to recognize the success and express some thanks.

  • First and foremost to Stephan (aka Eldor Ben), for the efforts he invested into jkara. Without your persistence and endless hours of coding, KaraNet would have died the moment the old server reached its end of life. Maybe its sad for you that we didn’t see a chance to develop the jkara codebase any further, but take my word for it: I have tried to transport as much of the lessons learned as possible to the new platform; code isn’t everything. To make it a tradition, I dedicate this first “release” to you.
  • Then to Mario (aka Kenshin), for believing that we could do it, the support on the committee, the help with the hardware and software and swallowing the occasional rants.
  • To all the users that helped fixing things on the testbed before we went on air....Hope, Ancalime, Soma, Paresi, Schlaubi, Mitch, Ivan...and some more I probably don’t recall at the moment.
Thank You!

We got here, now let’s work to take it further
